A George II silver tankard


by Richard Bayley, London 1729 Gently tapering sides, with a scroll thumb-piece, engraved with the arms of Robert James PETRE (1713-1742), 8th Baron Petre, height 21cm, weight 38oz.
|Robert James Petre became the 8th Baron at his birth, after his father premature death 3 months earlier. Notably until 1732 he remained in his mother's guardianship, despite marrying in 1732 Lady Henrietta Anna Mary Barbara RADCLIFFE at St Pauls Cathedral. He died at a young age of small pox. He was renowned as a botanist and horticulturalist and was made a Fellow of the Royal Society after his death.
