by Martin Hall & Co, London 1882 Of baluster form with scroll handle and ivory insulators, engraved with flower-heads and ivy garlands, and with presentation inscription for 1889, height 29.5cm, weight 17.3oz.
|The presentation inscription reads 'Presented to Miss A.Z.Webb by The Employes (sic) On The Newstead Abbey Estate On Her Wedding Day 7th Aug. 1889.'Augusta Zelia Webb, writer, (1858-1925) was the daughter of William Frederick Webb (1829–1899). W.F.Webb was a High Sheriff of Nottinghamshire and an Officer in the British Army.In 1861 he purchased Newstead Abbey at which point his wife began to collect memorabilia of Lord Byron, a former owner of the abbey.The abbey passed through Webb's surviving children until it was purchased by the philanthropist Sir Julien Cahn who gifted it to Nottingham City Council in 1931.
