A pair of large French 19th century gilt bronze figurative candelabraAfter a model by François-Thimothée MatilinEach with a pair of eighteen light two-tier candelabra with cast acanthus scrolled candle arms and a central urn shaped sconce on flared and reeded columns supported by two Greek muses, Euterpe and Erato on plinth bases, 54cm wide, 55cm deep, 134cm high (21in wide, 21 1/2in deep, 52 1/2in high) (2)注脚The original pair of candelabra by François-Thimotée Matelin formed part of a garniture comprising this model of candelabra and a mantel clock.The use of Classical muses supporting candelabra was a popular design in 19th century French decoration and comparable models were made by the Pierre-Philippe Thomire (French, 1751-1843, whose Parisian bronze foundry was arguably the most well known in early 19th century France. A pair of gilt bronze figural thirteen light candelabra with supporting Classical muses made by Thomire was offered for sale at Bonhams, New York Fine Furniture and Decorative Arts, 21 September 2011, lot 8301.
