He was a visionary and legendary watch collector, who spent most of his leisure time searching and collecting watches. During his tenure as Executive Chairman, "The Bank" as it was known rose in International prominence to become the 5th largest financial institution in the world. Whilst under his guidance he was also responsible for building the iconic headquarters that the bank calls home today. At the time the most expensive office building in the world. "The Sandberg Watch Collection", consisted of no less than 423 timepieces, mainly manufactured by European watchmakers from the 18th and 19th centuries, perhaps the most renowned slant of the collection was focused on highly decorative enamels, automaton pieces, singing bird boxes and watches associated with erotica. Many of these extraordinary objects of art were produced for the Chinese Market. This superb collection has been wonderfully portrayed and preserved in multiple volumes, and was eventually sold over two days in Geneva, Switzerland in 2001 for over US$,13,000,000. A number of the finest lots from the collection were bought at the auction by the Museums's of Patek Philippe, Breguet and Jacquet Droz, an undoubted homage to the taste, and wonderfully discerning eye of Lord Michael Sandberg.
