Edo period (1615-1868), probably mid-19th century The overlapping cover rendered with thin, accordion-style folds representing a yabumi (a folded letter tied to the shaft of an arrow) and decorated on the roiro (black-lacquer) ground in slight silver and gold hiramaki-e, e-nashiji and togidashi maki-e with autumnal flowers comprising: asagao (morning glory), fujibakama (thoroughwort), susuki (miscanthus), kikyo (Chinese bellflowers) and ominaeshi (valerian), the interior and underside of rich nashiji; unsigned. 2.2cm x 13cm (¾in x 5 1/8in).
