By Kinkozan, Meiji era (1868-1912), late 19th/early 20th century Finely decorated in enamels and gilt, each side with an episode from the civil wars of the 1330s: on one side the loyalist hero Kusunoki Masashige approaches the horen (imperial palanquin) of Emperor Godaigo during the latter's ill-fated campaign to reassert imperial rule; on the other side Masashige, perhaps accompanied by his younger brother Masasue, apparently carrying the emperor on his back; the waisted neck and the band of decoration above the foot replete with imperial symbols including chrysanthemums, dragons, ho-o birds and paulownia crests, each with a lappet border, signed on the base with a large iron-red painted seal Kinkozan tsukuru together with an impressed seal Kinkozan tsukuru. 75cm (29½in) high.
