Ismael Al-Sheikhly (Iraq, born 1924) Two Bedouin Ladies mixed media on board, framed signed 'Ismael Al Sheikhly' and dated '1961', executed in 1961 44 x 30cm (17 5/16 x 11 13/16in). Footnotes: Provenance: Property from the collection of the renowned Iraqi architect Mohammed Saleh Makiya (1914-2015) Thence by descent to the present owner 'Ismail al-Sheikhly's inspiration belongs to the women he has for many years now observed, wondered at, and idealized as they visit mosques or holy shrines in great numbers. This is the calculated observation of the visual artist: the women are arranged, re-arranged and dis-arranged in compositions of endless variations, all celebrating a mysterious pilgrimage in quest of more love, more fruition. The scene is intensely Iraqi and of the people, presented in a sophisticated treatment that hovers between the calligraphic and the abstract, are often distilled down to daubs of sheer colour' -Jabra Ibrahim Jabra This lot is subject to the following lot symbols: * * VAT on imported items at a preferential rate of 5% on Hammer Price and the prevailing rate on Buyer's Premium.
