The current lot features a Rolex Explorer 214270 which has had a DLC (diamond-like carbon) black coating applied to the body of the watch. The coating is so thin that it does not materially change the dimensions of the functional surfaces of the case. What really sets the current watch apart from other Explorers is the cloisonné enamel dial depicting Eurasia, Africa and Australasia. Closionné is a traditional and impressive process of enamelling whereby thin gold wires are fused onto the metal, filled with pigment by enamel artists and subsequently fired at high temperatures to form the enamel. This process is repeated until the cloisons are filled to the top of the wire. Sanding and polishing then lends the shiny smooth surface to the finished dial.
