秘色之名始见于晚唐诗人陆龟蒙《蒲里集·卷十二·秘色越器》：“九秋风露越窑开，夺得千峰翠色来。”有说唐宋间的秘色瓷是进贡朝廷的一种特制的瓷器精品，因其制作工艺秘而不宣得名。所谓“秘色瓷”，实为唐、五代之际越窑青瓷中的上乘之作。此器敞口，弧腹收至底足，通体施青秘色釉，无繁饰，尽显庄严静谧之像。
