PROPERTY FROM THE COLLECTION OF JAMES E. BREECE III AN EXTREMELY RARE PAINTED UNGLAZED QINGBAI-TYPE 'FINCH AND PLUM BLOSSOM' BRUSH-RESTSouthern Song dynasty (1127-1279) The rare painted and unglazed group standing on an integral semi-circular base with hand-rolled and twisted paste branches with applied plum blossoms and smaller budding branches that support a large bird, possibly a finch, traces of red pigment to the beak, buds and flower-heads, black-highlighted green wings and green budding branches and a dark brown-black pigment to the birds plump body and parts of the plum tree trunks. 5 7/8in (17.8 cm) wide 南宋 青白瓷系彩繪無釉梅花寒禽筆擱 Provenance: J.J. Lally & Co., New York, 2016 Collection of James M. Kemper, Jr., Kansas City, Missouri 來源: 紐約藍理捷中國文物,2016年 James M. Kemper二世舊藏,密蘇里州堪薩斯市 The rarity of such a painted unglazed Qingbai-type brush-rest is attested to by the paucity of published examples. To date we cannot locate aparable example. However, the subject of a bird amidst plum blossoms was a highly popular one during the Song dynasty. A wonderfulparison of a beautiful round fan-shaped painting by the Southern Song court painter Lin Chun (a. 1174-1189), Plum Blossoms, Bamboo and Wintry Bird , in the collection of Shanghai Museum can be found at the museum www.shanghaimuseum/id/CI00000983
