A PAIR OF ENGLISH SILVER-GILT TWO-HANDLED COVERED PORRINGERSunmarked, probably Charles II, circa 1680With foliate decoration and leaf-form finials;height 3 1/2in (9cm); width 6 1/2in (16.5cm); depth 5 1/2in (14cm); total weight approximately 34oz troy. For further information on this lot please visit theProvenance: Immediately following Charles II's proclamation as king in 1649, England entered the Englishmonwealth led by Oliver Cromwell after he defeated the king at the Battle of Worcester. As a result, Charles II and his court spent the following nine years in exile in France, the Dutch Republic, and the Spanish Netherlands. Cromwell's death and the resulting political crisis returned Charles II to the throne after those years abroad. The Dutch style chased foliate decoration is typical of the period and reflective of Charles II and his court's time in the Netherlands.ProvenanceE. & C. T.
