STATUETTE DE PADMAPANI EN ALLIAGE DE CUIVREThaïlande, Srivijaya, VIIIe/IXe siècle A COPPER ALLOY FIGURE OF PADMAPANI Thailand, Srivijaya, 8th/9th century Conforming with the classic iconography a small effigy of Amitabha in his elaborate coiffure and long stem held in his left hand with the closed lotus bud identifies the bodhisattva ofpassion, Lokeshvara Padmapani. Sensitively modelled attenuated body with the bare torso encircled by the Brahmanic cord, and the looping folds on the front of the lower garment, stand. 17.7cm (7in) high. (2). Provenance: Robert Rousset, Paris (1901-1981), acquired from Peng Seng, Bangkok, 21 December 1968 Jean-Pierre Rousset, Paris (1936-2021) pare with a figure of Avalokitesvara in the Benningson Collection (see N.Chutiwongs, Buddha of the Future , New York, 1994, no.36). Alsopare with a figure of Lokesvara in the Museum of Vat Po Veal, Battambang hold a similar mala and the same base (see M.Giteau, Khmer Sculpture and The Angkor Civilization , London, 1965, pl.XIII).
