A FIGURAL IZNIK POTTERY DISHOTTOMAN TURKEY, FIRST HALF 17TH CENTURYA FIGURAL IZNIK POTTERY DISHOTTOMAN TURKEY, FIRST HALF 17TH CENTURYThe white ground painted in cobalt-blue, bole-red, green and black with a central kneeling figure with a huqqa to his side, the pipe running through his hands, hyacinth and tulip sprays surround, the rim with alternating rosettes and floral sprays between black bands, some chips and staining to rim, the exterior with alternating green and blue motifs, foot drilled101/2in. (26.7cm.) diam.Unlike the more common depictions of standing figures, the present dish is somewhat unusual and depicts a kneeling figure at a loom. Another kneeling figure, although this time playing a tambourine, is illustrated in Hülya Bilgi, Dance of Fire, Istanbul, 2009, nos. 287-294, pp. 447-455).
