A FINE SOAPSTONE FIGURE OF LAN CAIHE 17th/18th century Elegantly carved holding a woven basket of flowers, wearing a richly-incised layered robe incised with designs of vaporous clouds, tied at the waist suspending a round reticulated pendant, her face with a benevolent expression and her hair painted in black drawn up in an elaborate chignon with long ends trailing down onto the back, traces of coloured pigment remaining. 21cm (8 2/8in) high. A genderless character in Daoist stories, Lan Caihe, however, is usually depicted as a female figure similar to Guanyin from the Qing dynasty onwards.
