18th century Of flattened hu form, exquisitely carved in relief to each side with a full-faced five-clawed dragon coiled around a 'flaming pearl' and encircled by the eight Buddhist emblems, bajixiang amidst lush ruyi-head clouds, all between a key-fret band at the rim and a band of overlapping lappets at the foot, the domed cover carved with four bats in flight amidst scrolling clouds surmounted by a knop finial in the form of a lotus bud, the waisted neck flanked by a pair of phoenix handles, the well-polished stone of even white tone and brown inclusions. 27.8cm (10 7/8in) high. The powerful five-clawed front-facing leaping dragon strongly rendered in the present lot is one of the most symbolic representations of Imperial authority. This design appears to be inspired by the 'dragon' moonflasks produced at the Imperial kiln at Jingdezhen during the Qianlong period and is relatively rarely found on Imperial jade carvings. See a larger but closely related spinach-green jade vase and cover (41cm high), Qianlong period, with a very similar form and decoration in the Baur Collection, illustrated by P. Schneeberger, The Baur Collection, Geneva: Chinese Jades and Other Hardstones, Geneva, 1976, no.B91. Compare also a white jade vase with a similar form and a similar cover but carved with lotus flowers, Qianlong mark and period, in the Palace Museum, Beijing, illustrated by Yang Boda, zhongguo yuqi quanji: 2, Hebei, 2005, no.211. For other related jade vases of slightly different forms but also decorated with full-faced leaping dragons, see an example in the Metropolitan Museum of Art, illustrated in H. R. Bishop, The Heber R. Bishop Collection of Jade and other Hard Stones. Handbook no.10. New York, 1909, p.62; and another jade vase and cover with handles suspending loose rings in the Tianjin Museum, illustrated in Jade Wares Collected by Tianjin Museum, Beijing, 2012, no.186. A third example previously in the collection of Sir John Buchanan Jardine. Bt., was sold at Christie's Hong Kong, 30 November 2011, lot 2971. Schneeberger著錄《The Baur Collection, Geneva: Chinese Jades and Other Hardstones》,日內瓦,1976年,編號B91。
