The Master of the Rocks School, 18th/19th century The nephrite pebble well hollowed, with a recessed, rounded-rectangular foot, carved with a continuous narrative scene of an attendant carrying a qin with his master next to a plate of fruit, about to travel in a landscape of rock and pine, box. 7.3cm (2 7/8in) high. Carved in the style of the Master of the Rocks school, with the superb use of different natural colours of the materials, skilfully rendering the main narrative scene, with the pine treen and rockwork entirely picked out of the brown russet skin. The depth of carving through the layers of skin lends a variation in colour to the relief detail that separates it subtly from the ground plane, resulting in a stronger rustic feeling of the scene. Compare with a yellow and russet jade 'landscape' snuff bottle in 'The Master of the Rocks' style depicting the four noble occupations, which was sold at Sotheby's Hong Kong, Snuff Bottles from the Mary & George Bloch Collection: Part VIII, 25 May 2014, lot 1032; see another yellow and russet jade 'figures in landscape snuff bottle of the same school, sold at Sotheby's Hong Kong Snuff Bottles from the Mary & George Bloch Collection: Part VII, 25 November 2013, lot 74.
