RUTH BADER GINSBURG'S COPIES OF THE COLUMBIA LAW SCHOOL MAGAZINE ISSUE CELEBRATING HER 25 YEARS ON THE COURT.Sincerely, Ruth Bader Ginsburg. New York: Columbia Law School, 2018. 4to. Original printed wrappers. Seven Supreme Court Justices attended Columbia Law School, with Ruth Bader Ginsburg the most recent alum. Her Columbia degree came about through strange circumstances: she asked Erwin Griswold, the Dean at Harvard Law, if she could take her final year of classes at Columbia while her husband started his new job in New York City, but still earn her degree from Harvard. The dean refused, so Ginsburg transferred to Columbia. Now Harvard has one less Supreme Court Justice on its roster, and Columbia one more. To his credit, Griswold attempted to make amends by encouraging Jimmy Carter to appoint Ginsburg to a Federal judge, paving the way for her nomination to the Supreme Court. This volume reproduces several Ruth Bader Ginsburg documents from the Columbia archives, including the 1972 letter to the Columbia University president regarding recruitment of female professors; a copy of a 1994 reunion questionnaire in which she writes that she and her daughter Jane are the first mother-daughter law school teaching team; and the famous speech she gave in 1980 when she revealed she declined to trade in her Columbia degree for a Harvard one when that option became available.
